Gangrene is a medical term used to represent the death of an area of the body. It develops when the blood supply is cut off to the affected part as a result of various processes, such as Infection, Vascular Disease, or Trauma. Gangrene can affect any part of the body; the most common sites include the Toes, Fingers, Feet, and Hands.

    Two major types of Gangrene:

A reduction of blood flow causes dry gangrene through the arteries. It appears gradually and progresses slowly. In most people, the affected portion does not become infected. In this sort of gangrene, the tissue converts cold and black, begins to dry, and finally sloughs off. Dry Gangrene usually is recognized in people with blockage of arteries (Arteriosclerosis) growing from developed cholesterol levels, cigarette smoking, diabetes, and genetic and other factors.

Wet or Moist Gangrene happens as a complication of an untreated infected wound. Swelling resulting from the bacterial virus causes a sudden stoppage of blood flow. Cessation of blood flow facilitates the invasion of the muscles by the bacteria and multiplication of the bacteria.

Gas gangrene is a sort of wet gangrene created by the bacteria known as Clostridia. Clostridia are a type of infection-causing bacteria that increase only in the absence of oxygen. As clostridia grow, they develop poisonous toxins and gas; therefore, the condition is called Gas Gangrene.

Consult a Gangrene Specialist Doctor immediately if the following Signs develop: An area of the body turns blue or black, a wound does not heal in seven to 14 days, Pain in a localized area is difficult, unexplained fever is persistent; Pus or blood drains from the wound; A foul-smelling odor discharges from the wound.

The Diagnosis of Gangrene is based on history, physical examination of the wound, blood tests, and other exams like examining a sample of the drainage from the wound; x-ray; ct scan; MRI and arteriogram, etc.

People with Gangrene need urgent assessment and treatment to prevent the spread of gangrene. Gangrene Treatment options in allopathy include anticoagulants, antibiotics, pain relievers, keeping the wound clean and sterile and hyperbaric oxygen therapy and finally amputation or surgery. Ayurvedic treatment for Gangrene in Hyderabad has firmly gained the success rate.

In Ayurveda, Gangrene is compared to “Dushta Vranam” and Susrutha gave details of causes treatments, complications elaborately. The Gangrene Treatment is done with Shastir Upakramas (60 Procedures) of Vrana. Vrana Shodhana (Cleansing the Wound), Vrana Ropana (Healing the Wound) is done initially along with Panchakarma (Detoxification / Purification) Procedures. RAKTHA MOKSHANAM (Blood Letting by using Leeches) and AGNI KARMA are indicated in Vrana Chikitsa. Researched internal medicines and treatment for the underlying disease also has to be done.

    What is Gangrene?

Gangrene refers to the death of a body tissue because of a lack of blood supply or a serious bacterial infection.

Even though gangrene may affect any of the body’s tissues, the condition usually starts in the fingers, hands, toes, or feet. The earlier the condition is detected, the better the possibility of recovery. The condition can turn fatal if not treated promptly.

What Are the Different Types of Gangrene?

Gangrene can be of different types, including the following:

    • Dry gangrene: This condition develops when the blood flow to a body area is blocked, causing the tissue to become dry, shrink, and turn purplish-blue or black in color. Peripheral artery disease and atherosclerosis are the common causes of dry gangrene.
    • Wet gangrene: This type of gangrene occurs due to disrupted blood flow along with a bacterial infection (clostridia) affecting body tissue. It causes swelling in the area, drainage of fluid, and a bad smell.
    • Gas gangrene: This is a rare and dangerous type of gangrene that develops when bacterial infection starts multiplying quickly in the muscle tissue, forming toxins, and releasing gas into the tissue. The condition spreads quickly and may even lead to death within 48 hours if it is not treated immediately.

The symptoms of gas gangrene include extreme pain, swelling, pale skin that may turn purplish-red or greyish, a foul-smelling discharge, and fluid drainage.

    • Internal gangrene: This condition develops when the blood flow to an internal organ is blocked, such as the appendix, intestines, or gallbladder.
    • Fournier’s gangrene: The genital organs are affected by this type of gangrene. The condition normally affects men, but can also affect women in some cases. It occurs due to an infection in the urinary tract or genital region.

At Vardhan Ayurveda Hospital, our experienced Ayurvedic doctors help in the early identification and the best Ayurvedic gangrene treatment in Hyderabad using natural Ayurvedic remedies.

    How Does Ayurveda Describe Gangrene?

According to Ayurveda, gangrene is not considered to be a medical disease but is thought to be a part of conditions like ‘Dushta Vrana’ (chronic or infected wounds) or ‘Mamsa Kshaya’ (degeneration or damage of body tissues).

Ayurveda believes that every human body is made up of three doshas (Vata, Kapha, and Pitta) and an aggravation or imbalance of these doshas may lead to various conditions, including gangrene.

The following gangrene symptoms may be noticed due to the aggravation of the following doshas:

    • Vata dosha: Leads to symptoms like tissue degeneration, dryness, and extreme pain.
    • Kapha dosha: Leads to heaviness, swelling, and sluggish hearing.
    • Pitta dosha: Leads to a burning sensation, inflammation, and tissue necrosis (death of the tissues).

According to Ayurveda, other causes of gangrene may include a blockage or dysfunction of the body’s lymphatic channels and the accumulation of toxins in the body which results in tissue death and impaired healing.

The different Ayurvedic treatments offered may include:

    1. Herbal remedies: Some Ayurvedic herbs that may be recommended include:

    • Manjishtha: It helps improve blood circulation and detoxify the blood.
    • Turmeric: It has antiseptic properties and helps reduce inflammation.
    • Guggulu: It helps in tissue healing and reducing swelling.
    • Neem: It acts as an antimicrobial herb and detoxifies the body.

    2. External applications: The external application of the following natural remedies may be recommended:

    • Vrana Shodana: This procedure involves cleansing chronic or infected wounds using herbal oils, pastes, and dressings to remove toxins and impurities to provide a healthy healing environment.
    • Vrana Ropana: It helps in wound healing using oils and herbs that help regenerate the damaged tissue, ensuring proper tissue repair, and reducing scarring.
    • Honey: It is used for dressing wounds due to its antibacterial and healing properties.

    • Panchavalkala Kwatha: This is a decoction of five barks used as a wound cleanser.
    • Aloe Vera: It is applied to the affected area to soothe it and improve healing.

    3. Panchakarma therapy: It is a combination of five different techniques performed to detoxify the body. The most common techniques used for gangrene treatment include the following:

    • Raktamokshana (bloodletting): This procedure is performed by puncturing the veins in the affected part of the body or application of leeches to remove the impure blood from the body and improve circulation.
    • Virechana (purgation): Some herbal laxatives are administered to eliminate the Pitta toxins from the body.
    • Basti (medicated enema): Medicated enemas are used to balance the Vata dosha and improve circulation in the body.

    4. Thermal therapy (Agni Karma): It involves the application of controlled heat to the affected area to cauterize (burn the skin) the dead tissue, improve blood flow, help in the regeneration of healthy tissue, and prevent further damage to the body tissue.

    5. Dietary changes: Ayurvedic doctors suggest some dietary changes to enable improved healing. These changes include:

    • Eat a diet rich in antioxidants and vitamins.
    • Eat foods that are easily digestible.
    • Avoid oily, fried, or processed food items.

    6. Lifestyle changes: Healthy lifestyle choices are recommended to manage the condition better. These changes include:

    • Exercise regularly to improve circulation.
    • Maintain hygiene around the affected gangrene area.
    • Avoid smoking and alcohol consumption, as it could worsen circulation and healing.

    7. Surgical interventions: If tissue necrosis is severe, Ayurveda suggests surgical debridement, known as ‘Shalya Chikitsa’, to surgically remove the dead tissue and combine it with other wound-healing treatments.

It should be remembered that gangrene can lead to life-threatening complications if left untreated.

Although Ayurveda can complement conventional treatments in the early stages of gangrene or be used for secondary care, advanced cases require immediate medical intervention, such as surgical debridement or antibiotics.

Gangrene treatment options in Allopathy include the use of antibiotics, pain relievers, keeping the wound clean and sterile, hyperbaric oxygen therapy, and finally surgery or amputation.

It is, therefore, recommended to consult an Ayurvedic doctor and an Allopathic medical doctor for a comprehensive approach to managing gangrene.
