Liver is the Largest Internal Organ and is the most important Organ essential for our Life & Survival. Liver performs more than 500 Life functions in coordination with other Organs. Because of its strategic location (Centrally Placed in the Right Abdomen) and with its multidimensional functions, it is connected to almost every organ in our body.

Liver is an Unique Organ, where Its function cannot be replaced or outsourced. Liver is considered to be the ‘Life Giver’. Liver is the only organ that can repair itself ever if 80% of Liver is damaged.

With all of the Irregular Diets; Untimely Foods; Alcohol Partying; BPO Jobs; Chinese Food & Junk Food Cultures; Popping up of Medicines for every reason; Increased incidence & Usage of Hypertension, Diabetes, Thyroid Medicine; Pesticide Vegetable & Fruits Consumption; Air Pollution; Contaminated Environment etc are damaging the Liver of almost every one of us.

Liver Disease is the 5th Highest Killer of Mankind. Last Decade and above the Incidence of Liver Diseases was not so prevalent as it is in this Decade. According to WHO 2018 Statistics – Almost 2,50,000 People suffering with Liver Diseases die every year in India accounting to almost 3% of the total deaths.

In Allopathy and in terminal cases Liver transplant is the only option, to which unfortunately not many people have an access & are affordable. Liver diseases are a considerable burden on the family and the society.

There are more than 100 different Liver Diseases. Today Let’s talk about some of the more commonly occurring among them –

Alcoholic Liver Disease (ALD) – is a result of over consuming Alcohol that damages the Hepatic Cells or the Liver, leading to a build-up of Fats, leading to Inflammation, Fibrosis & Scarring. ALD is a common cause of Fatal Liver Cirrhosis & End Stage Liver Failure & Death. As little as two drinks a day may be enough to cause this condition. Yet, it is highly preventable by avoiding or minimizing consumption of Alcohol.

Autoimmune Hepatitis (AIH) – is a disease in which the body’s own immune system attacks the liver and causes it to become inflamed. The disease is chronic, meaning it lasts many years. If untreated, it can lead to Cirrhosis and Liver Failure. It can occur along with other Autoimmune Diseases like Graves Disease, Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) & Lupus (SLE). Approximately 80 percent of patients diagnosed with AIH are Women.

Viral Hepatitis – Hepatitis is Infection & Inflammation of the Liver caused by the Hepatitis A, B, C, D or E virus. Each type is spread different ways, including by eating unclean food, drinking contaminated water, having sex or sharing needles or contact with someone who is infected. With some types, the virus goes away on its own. In others, it can be a lifelong condition.

Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD) – is the most common Liver Disease, effecting almost everyone these days. Over eating or Deposition of Excessive fat can be toxic to the liver and cause inflammation. It is the leading cause of Cirrhosis with risk factors that include Diabetes & Obesity.

NAFLD is the leading indication for Liver Transplantation in people less than 50 years of age and has become very common. NAFLD can be prevented by eating a healthy diet and maintaining a healthy weight and exercising regularly. In people with NAFLD, diet, exercise and weight loss can reverse the condition.

Primary Biliary Cholangitis (PBC) – is a chronic condition in which the bile ducts in the Liver are slowly destroyed. Over time, bile can back up in the Liver and lead to irreversible Scarring of Liver Tissue (Cirrhosis). PBC is commonly associated with other conditions such as thyroid disease, osteoporosis, dry eyes, dry mouth and breast cancer. When recognized early, this condition can be effectively treated.

Benign Liver Tumours – Benign or Non Cancerous Liver Tumours are common and rarely pose a Serious Health Risk. … The three most common types are HaemangiomaFocal Nodular Hyperplasia’s & Hepato Cellular Adenomas. Seldom do any of these conditions require Treatments.

Liver Cirrhosis – Liver Cirrhosis is an overly or Irreversibly scarred Liver and poor function of the Liver due to chronic inflammation. It is a consequence of any Chronic Liver Disease and can lead to such complications as Ascitis, Oesophageal Varices, Hepatic Encephalopathy, Hepato Renal Syndrome, Hyper Spleenism, Hepato Pulmonary Syndrome, Liver Failure and Liver Cancer. Cirrhosis is potentially reversible if treated appropriately.
