Slipped Disc Condition and Ayurvedic treatment

Slipped Disc Condition and Ayurvedic treatment

The Herniated disc condition, the bulged disc condition, PIVD(protruded intervertebral disc)condition are the different names of one health problem. This is a health condition wherein the disc in middle of two vertebral bodies starts coming out on one side- anterior (Front end) or posterior(Rear end). These discs are like bags filled with liquid, and work like shock-absorbent or provides cushion to the spine. There are numerous hard bony vertebrae in the vertebral column of the spine and there is plenty of movements with these vertebrae are located. When we turn from one side to another side, or we lift our head upwards, downwards and even when we bend forward or backward in posture, there is movement in the spine. These discs are critical for the free movements of the spine. Apartfrom these situations - when we walk/run there will be shocks and jerks occurring along the spine and these bags are crucial forbalancing any kind of jerks in between the spine. Hence, these discs are vital for the normal functioning of the human body.

The spine of a human being is inverted "S" shape. It consists of two main curvatures along the length of the spine which are flexible to move according to the posture of the human being –These are the "cervical" and "lumbar" curvatures. Theyfunction perfectly due to the spaces in between the two vertebrae. When there is a difference (especially reduction) of the space between two vertebrae, excess pressure will be exerted on the intervertebral discs. Because of the uneven pressure on the disc, there is protrusion (or) bulge (or) herniation of the disc. This condition is known as SLIP DISC condition.

In general, the slip disc condition is diagnosed by observing certainsigns and symptoms. When a disturbance due to slip disc occurs, it starts exerting pressure on the nerves surround the disc of a human body. The nerve around the slip disc will be excited which causes a sensation of Pain, Burning or Numbness in that area of the nerve. The pain or sensation can be experienced in other areas of the human body, through which that nervetravels. It can also be limited to a location in neck or back of the human body.

The Signs and Symptoms of Slip Disc condition of the spine:

The Ayurvedic approach to the treatment of the Slip Disc condition of the Spine

Usually the modern medical science believes that this this situation of the spine occurs due to disturbance just in bones and joints of the vertebral disc.Whereas Ayurveda takes a "Wholistic" approach towards slip disc problem of the spine and proclaims the truth that this is a problem at three levels

  • 1. Mamsa Dhatu
  • 2. Asthi Dhatu
  • 3. Majja Dhatu

These are unalike tissue levels according to Ayurveda:

The "Mamsa" is the muscle portion of the Human Body.

The "Asthi" represents bones, and the Majjarepresentsall other constituents in between and in the bones.

Mamsa (the muscles) starts stiffening due to the dryness – improper diet and imbalanced lifestyle and deteriorate the curvature of the spine- which leads to the deterioration of the intervertebral discs.

Asthi (the bony tissue) is affected due to the muscles.

Majja(the spine) is compressed due to pressure and other effects.

So, slip disc must be treated in a wise manner, and in a wholesome manner.Instead ofremoving the protruded tissues (Laminotomy), and this is the basic reason because of which there are risks associated with the surgery of the patients’ spine. In most of the cases, when treated with modern science and operated, the patient had to go for a second surgery to stay pain free. This is a mechanical problem of the spine, so medicines alone can give you temporary relief. So,it is better for the patient to save money and invest it on complete cure for the problem, rather than to just taking the pain killers and medicines. They will be indicated in epilepsy to just reduce the signs and symptoms.

" Ayurveda is the best approach for a successful treatment of slip disc without surgery. "
